Call for Papers: "Popular Culture & the Challenge of Sustainable Futures"

The Ecology and Culture Area of the Popular Culture/American Culture Association (PCA), which ISF is chairing, is soliciting papers on Popular Culture and the Challenge of Sustainable Futures for the 2024 annual conference (March 27-30, 2024 in Chicago).

This is a call for papers on ways popular cultures has responded to the challenge of sustainable futures, on how movies, novels, comics, theater, games, music, fashion, and more have expressed different imaginaries of how the future might look and feel.

The challenge is to both those producing and those consuming stories about the future, stories imagining and exploring different struggles and transitions to create “sustainable futures.”

Many of us experience a dramatic shift in perspective when first connecting the stories of wildfires and floods, storms and droughts, rising temperatures and sea levels with the rise in greenhouse gases from our societies’ fossil fuel-based production and consumption patterns.

Projections of the impacts of climate change and the sixth mass biodiversity extinction bring an ecospheric frame to visions and stories of the future. Overall, how has popular culture influenced public opinion, attitudes, behavior and policy regarding the future of the human species and the ecosystems upon which we depend?

Sessions are scheduled in 1½ hour slots, typically with four papers or speakers per standard session. Presentations should not exceed 15 minutes. Working professionals, scholars, educators, and graduate students are all encouraged to submit.

Interested individuals are asked to submit an abstract of no more than 250 words (including presentation title) and complete contact information (name, institutional affiliation, mail and e-mail addresses, and contact telephone number), with reference to the Ecology and Culture Area, at https://pcaaca.org/page/submissionguidelines.
