New ISF project: Reducing plastic waste

On March 14, after months of discussions, plans and exchanges, our project proposal to organize a collaborative project focusing on reducing plastic waste, globally and locally, but especially within the UNECE region, was finally approved.

We have been working on the idea with our overseas environmental NGO partners in European ECO Forum over the past year, finally developing a plan to (1) reach out to organizations and initiatives working in both countries to address the plastics pollution crisis, (2) to organize a series of at least eight bi-lingual webinars on a range of plastic waste topics, (3) to invite plastic waste activists to share their strategies and actions through stories, photographs and videos, (4) to be featured in a visual gallery of strategies situated on a dedicated project website, which we will design and moderate.

Among some of the various problems and challenges confronting the project are the ongoing Covid19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, political polarization and uncertainties in US politics, industry resistance, insufficient scientific data, not to mention the deep entrenchment of plastics within today's consumer society. Stay tuned.
