AAA Annual Meeting
Dec 2004: ISF's Executive Director, Mr. Jeffrey Barber gave a presentation titled "US progress towards sustainability" during the the Annual Meeting of the American Anthropological Association, held in Atlanta between December 15 and 19 2004.
ANPED Conference & AGM
Oct 2004: ISF's Executive Director, Mr. Jeffrey Barber attended the Annual General Meeting organized by ANPED as a part of ANPED's Board of Directors. He also participated in the conference " Strategies for Sustainability: Making them work", that was held in conjunction with the AGM. The conference and AGM were held in Zagreb, Croatia between Oct 22- 24.
Production-Consumption Systems: Research frontiers
Oct. 2004: ISF's Executive Director, Mr. Jeffrey Barber attended an international workshop organized by The Unit for Social and Environmental Research (USER), Chiang Mai University titled "Sustainable Production-Consumption Systems: Research Frontiers" between October 1- 3 2004. The purpose of this workshop was to arrive at an improved framework and agenda for research on the sustainability of production-consumption systems that increasingly stretch across disparate parts of the globe.
CitNet News relaunched, highlights community leadership
Sept 2004. The newsletter of the Citizens Network for Sustainable Development is back in production, thanks to the editorial efforts of ISF. CitNet News highlights the efforts of citizens taking leadership for sustainability around the country. The e-newsletter provides a forum for U.S. sustainability activists to share news, views, and stories about the sustainability movement in their communities.
ISF helps CitNet launch new campaign on leadership
July 4, 2004. Recognizing a need for more focus and support of U.S. leaders committed to sustainability, Citizens Network for Sustainable Development launched their Campaign for Leadership on Sustainability over the Independence Day holiday. (ISF serves as the secretariat for CitNet. See press release for details.)
ISF produces new newsletter on SPAC
April 2004, New York. ISF published "Getting the Goods: Civil society news and views on sustainable production and consumption" for circulation at the 12th session of the Commission for Sustainable Development (CSD 12) and beyond. This issue includes an article by Jeffrey Barber, ISF's Executive Director, and two articles by Veena Ramani, ISF Program Associate.
ISF helps create and launch online database
ISF, in collaboration with the North American Sustainable Consumption Alliance (NASCA), the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, the Canadian Center for Pollution Prevention and the University of Sonora, has launched the Sustainable Consumption and Production Database. The database aims at facilitating cooperation among organizations in Canada, United States and Mexico that are interested in promoting sustainable consumption and production. Internet users can access a single website to find information about sustainable consumption and production initiatives and programmes throughout North America. The Database is also intended as a resource for citizens to learn about projects or initiatives that they can support, join, or replicate in their own community. [Read the NASCA press release.]
ISF director gives keynote speech in China
Dec 6, 2003, Changsha, China. ISF's Executive Director, Jeffrey Barber, delivered a keynote speech in Changsha, China entitled "U.S. progress towards sustainable production and consumption" at the International Forum on Sustainable Production and Consumption. The Forum, held between Dec 6–8 2003, was jointly organized by UNEP, the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) of China, the People's Government of Hunan Province (PGHP), and the China Science and Technology Association (CSTA).
Vietnamese planners visit ISF
Oct 7, 2003. A group of city planners from Vietnam—traveling under the Department of State's International Visitors Program visited Integrative Strategies Forum. They discussed ISF, the Citizen's Network for Sustainable Development, and inquired about issues relating to sustainable communities.
ISF organizes SPAC strategy meeting at UNEP-North America
Oct 1, 2003, Washington, DC. ISF hosted an informal strategy meeting on behalf of the Sustainable Production and Consumption Working Group (SPAC WG) of the Citizen's Network for Sustainable Development (CitNet). This meeting, was held at the United Nations Environment program office in Washington DC.
ISF becomes issue group co-chair in ECO-Forum
At the recent ECO-Forum conference in Kyiv, Jeffrey Barber, Executive Director of ISF, accepted the co-chair position for the ECO-Forum SPAC Issue Group. As part of this role, we will create and manage a website for the Issue Group. Issue Group participants plan to use the website as a tool for collaborating on solutions for more sustainable production and consumption within the European and North American regions.
ISF at Marrakech SPAC experts' meeting
June 2003, Marrakech, Morocco. As one of only four civil society participants in the Marrakech Experts Meeting on Sustainable Consumption and Production, ISF's Veena Ramani reports on the development of a 10-year framework in support of national and regional SPAC initiatives in her summary of the outcomes. (The meeting was held by UNDSD and UNEP, following up the WSSD last fall.)
Two new publications on production and consumption
"Production, Consumption, and the World Summit on Sustainable Development" [PDF] is an article published in a Dutch academic journal by Jeffrey Barber, ISF Executive Director. The paper assesses governments' progress in policy development since Rio, and evaluates the WSSD Plan of Implementation.
For the Environment for Europe-Kyiv meeting, ISF published the May 2003 edition of SPAC Update [PDF]. This newsletter analyzes the progress (or relative lack thereof) that developed countries are making, summarizes SPAC activities and outcomes at the UN's CSD session in April, and reprints several useful articles from other sources.

SPAC workshop in Kiev planned for May 22
ISF is organizing a workshop on May 22, "Towards Sustainable Production & Consumption in the ECE Region", during the Environment for Europe meeting in Kiev. A featured speaker will be Frits Schlingemann, Director, UNEP Regional Office for Europe. [Update: Event summary is available.]
CSD 11 updates and news at SDIN site
For the latest on news and outcomes regarding the UN Commission on Sustainable Development, take a look at the Sustainable Development Issues Network website, created and managed by ISF.
The CSD Implementation Cycles Chart [PDF] (adapted from UN materials by Gary Pupurs, ISF Communications Manager) highlights the CSD themes for the next 15 years.
Sustainable production and consumption will be an overarching objective and cross-cutting theme for each year.

Sustainable consumption on the table for the holidays at GWU
ISF was invited to speak at a panel discussion on sustainable consumption at George Washington University Dec. 9th organized by SustainUS and GESPA.
ISF's Communications Manager, Gary Pupurs, spoke on SPAC policy from an international and domestic perspective. At the meeting, the SustainUS Gift Giving Guide was released, in time for the holiday shopping season.
ISF helps CitNet organize WSSD briefing for Congress
The CitNet Congressional working group held a briefing in the Capitol Nov. 18th for Congressional staff on WSSD outcomes and domestic opportunities.
Covering topics such as climate change, trade, and corporate accountability, the five speakers stressed the need for more active Congressional interest in sustainable development and international policy negotiation. (National Wildlife Federation and ISF assisted the working group in organizing and funding the briefing.)
SPAC at WSSD: Priority with weak commitments
A new ISF paper [PDF] reviews ten years of progress and obstacles, noting that the WSSD outcomes do not measure up to the expectations set for WSSD, the ten year review of Agenda 21.
NGOs call for greater accountability at UN
ISF, along with several other organizations and networks, was actively involved in promoting corporate accountability as a cross-cutting focus for the World Summit at PrepCom 2, held in NYC recently.
The UN has published an article on their Summit website summarizing these efforts.
ISF highlights lack of media attention to sustainable development
ISF participated in a Carriage House event on the need for promoting sustainable development and obstacles to be overcome. ISF Executive Director Jeffrey Barber is quoted in a UN article on the event.
Endowment for ISF launched
John and Libby Morse of the SURFREE Foundation sign the final papers creating the Morse Integrative Strategies Endowment, to assist in funding ISF's administrative and programmatic work in the future.
Paper examines human behavior into next millennium
ISF has published a paper, "The Next Thousand Years"[PDF], which addresses our society's tendency to overemphasize short-term thinking and explores the decisions and consequences of our global actions and the prospect of sustainability in the next millennium. The author, Jeffrey Barber, highlights the urgent need to take responsibility for our behavior and its impact on future generations.

ISF Launches isforum.org Website
After a brief hiatus, the ISF website is back. We now have our own domain; If you were looking for us at our previous address on Co-op America's web servers, we hope you found us with not too much difficulty! [03Jan01]
ISF Named As CitNet Secretariat
ISF has been selected as the Secretariat for the Citizens' Network for Sustainable Development. As Secretariat, Integrative Strategies Forum will provide coordination and management for the network, maintain and expand CitNet's websites and listserves, direct and manage CitNet's projects and working groups, and assist in future fundraising.
